Prospero Theatre Company, with license from the American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER) and Broadway Impact, is proud to announce a one-night-only reading of “8,” a play chronicling the historic trial in the federal constitutional challenge to California’s Proposition 8, written by Academy Award-winning screenwriter and AFER Founding Board Member Dustin Lance Black. “8” is an unprecedented account of the Federal District Court trial in Perry v. Schwarzenegger (now Perry v. Brown), the case filed by AFER to overturn Proposition 8, which stripped gay and lesbian Californians of the fundamental freedom to marry. Black, who penned the Academy Award-winning feature film Milk and the film J. Edgar, based “8” on the actual words of the trial transcripts, first-hand observations of the courtroom drama and interviews with the plaintiffs and their families. Prospero Theatre Company is staging its one-night-only reading on October 28, 2012 at 4:00 pm at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Minneapolis (2315 Chicago Avenue South). There will be a panel discussion after the performance. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us at info@prosperotheatre.org or 651-705-6184. |

Our name is a tribute to our good friend, Dr. Randy Winkler. In March of 2008, Dr. Winkler was suddenly forced to resign from his position as a college theatre professor and Chair of the Theatre Department. The situation left his students, colleagues and friends bewildered, shocked, grieved and furious. An event like this serves as a poignant reminder that while we have come a long way in fighting discrimination, there still is much work to do before equality is a reality for all people.
When Dr. Winkler left his job, he left a simple sign on his office door which read, "Our revels now are ended," a quotation by the character Prospero from Shakespeare's The Tempest. This line comes from a monologue at the end of the play, as the sorceror Prospero is giving up his power. "Revels" here means festivity, or merry-making, and it implies that Prospero is recognizing the end not only of his power struggle, but of his life. In this monologue, coincidentally, Shakespeare draws many comparisons between life and a theatrical presentation - that each is magical, transitory, and in essence, a dream. As Prospero releases his control over his life, he refers to the people around him as "actors" and "spirits" that "are melted into air, into thin air," and to his life as an "insubstantial pageant" that fades and dissolves. Coming at the end of the play, this extended theatrical metaphor is appropriate for a character who is getting ready to close the curtains on his life.
Although in The Tempest, Prospero's revels come to an end, for the Prospero Theatre Company, our revels are just beginning. Theatre is indeed a fleeting art. Every play comes to a close; the relationships vanish, and play's world disappears as soon as the audience starts applauding. But while the theatre may be temporal and even illusory, its artistic power with an audience, and the connections that theatre artists make with each other through our collaborations, will never fade away.
This is exactly our mission: to engage audiences with meaningful theatrical works, while enhancing our understanding of the craft of theatre. In gratitude and love toward Dr. Randy Winkler, we fully intend to savor each "pageant" we create.

Check out what people have been saying about Prospero Theatre Company - from audience members to the press.

"I am not easily swayed to tears but this play captured my heart and imagination. A simple set, wonderful actors, an impression left upon my brow for days. I loved this play and hope to see many more Prospero productions." -Darren, audience member
"I was blown away by your performance. How, without a single set, you were able to transport me through time and other worlds with such vividness, I do not know. Your performance was thought-provoking, chilling, hilarious, and poetically beautiful. I was bawling and laughing the whole drive home as I thought of how all the pieces fit together. Thanks for feeding my soul." -Willow, audience member
"Sparse, but cool. With any show like that, the acting has to carry everything - no props, sets, sleight of hand to fall back on - and you pulled that off as well as I have ever seen. I cried at the end and wasn’t prepared for that." -Jon, audience member
"Saw the play last night, it was fabulous!!! Your acting is so real. I could feel all your emotions and the story was most thought provoking. I would recommend others to see it. The cast was great, loved how you used the whole studio and how much you were able to tell with so little props and backdrops. You all took me to places I never thought about before. Great show. LOVED IT!!!" -Kate, audience member
"Eurydice... was a thought-provoking play that has stayed with me the past few days. It fits the mission of Prospero Theatre to show the enchantment that theatre provides. ...The world of that play and its play with love, death, and purpose is hardly gone from me, although the performance ended over 48 hours ago. Some revels do not end." -Nan, audience member
"...MaryLynn Mennicke [has a] lovely take on the title character, Eurydice. Mennicke's natural and naive sweetness serves the play perfectly. She displays a newborn quality, as though her character is just waking up from a long sleeping beauty nap. This creates a sense of discovery which animates every scene. I couldn't take my eyes off her. Also good is Jameson Jon Baxter as the lyrically intense Orpheus. His attempts to communicate with the dead Eurydice through the magic medium of his music are wonderful. I also greatly enjoyed Josiah Laubenstein's arch and angular Nasty Man, followed by his malicious Child – whose main job seems to be procuring partners for his sexually voracious mother, played in a very nice turn by Rachel Kuhnle." -John Olive, HowWastheShow.com
